At first look, the Nikon D90 camera looks like the D80. In fact, when I bought it, I had to double check the badge just to make sure I had the right camera.

Since the D90 looks so alike its predecessor, the camera appears as if it is only one of those cameras with subdued incremental upgrades. Not true. Dig deeper and you will be surprised to know that it has features to keep Nikon fans more than happy.

Autofocus system

The D90 viewfinder, like the Nikon D80 viewfinder, sports an AF system (11-point) in a diamond arrangement. Still sporting the name Multi-Cam 1000, the autofocus engine of the D90 has been updated to include the 3-dimensional focus tracking. The D90 also sports the Face Detection system that biases AF points to favor eyes over noses and other objects in the scene.

Live view features

Activating the Live shooting feature on other Nikon cameras means turning the Drive Mode control to Lv, hen you should press the shutter button to lock up the mirror. This is hardly intuitive, but the D90 has a Live view button on its back, right of the LCD. This live view button is within reach of the thumb.

Scene recognition system

Nikon has been working on scene recognition for years, and they are reaping the fruit of their labor. Their newest units now have this system. The Nikon D90 comes with this feature.

The bottom line

Existing owners of the Nikon D80 will surely love the D90 camera. Building on the strength of its ancestor, the D90 has a lot going for it.

Building on the might of the D80, the D90 has many exciting things going for it. This latest model from Nikon updates several specs and sports many new features over the D80.

The bottom line is, the D90 is a remarkably well-rounded DSLR offering. Very highly recommended.
