Functional, practical or purely aesthetic, photography lies somewhere between science and art. The written media depends on photography as the visual support for the materials they publish. In fact, people have got used to seeing pictures for the columns they read. Other than this one major application of photography, people take pictures because they like it and they can.

The history of photography begins with the invention of camera obscura in the antiquity but so many steps have been made ever since. For a long period of time, photography depended on films for the image forming device. As a recording medium, the film is now considered obsolete in comparison with the great achievements and possibilities of digital technology. When exposed to light, the recording environment creates a latent image that is afterwards converted into a usable image.

We can hardly mention all the uses of photography for such long lists. Together with the recorded videos of a certain event, pictures provide highly reliable scientific evidence. There are military, archaeological, forensic, data storage and geographical applications for photography, and these are the largest and most extensively used. Identity control and personal documents require photos. Other than such official applications, there is the entertainment part of photography that we cannot ignore here.

All mobile phones have incorporated photo cameras, and the pictures we take can be immediately uploaded on the Internet with the possibility to access the world wide web from the cell phone. The technology has reached such an extent that photography dominates so many intimate moments in our lives. There is no baptism or wedding without photo shooting and video recording. Or, consider for instance traveling, we will inevitably take at least one camera with us on our journey.

There is one other side of photography that is less commercial, but this falls into the realm of art. Photographers with international recognition have photography exhibitions worldwide. They are invited to commemorate events, support shows or just give expression to a feeling, an opportunity, an occasion that would otherwise be lost for good. Artistic photos oppose everything that is practical or commercial: their purpose is to express and delight artistically.
